Because it’s not necessarily that I hold the franchises I love to a higher standard (although I do) it’s that the hope is stronger.
And it especially hurts when this is done on a franchise where one of the creator’s MAJOR concerns was diversity and the portrayal of POC as diverse and complex characters.
Do the producers and casting people know what Shana did and still does for so many people? Do they care how groundbreaking this show is TO THIS DAY in terms of diversity? And do they know how hurtful it is that a 30 year old show is still a major oasis in the barren realm that is Hollywood’s at best noncommittal attempts at diversity?
This is like Star Trek all over again. And I don’t think my heart can take much more of this.
But no. I am seriously upset about Shana’s casting for the live action movie.
I was keeping my mind open about the movie until they cast the holograms. They have.
And I am not pleased.
The actress playing Shana is WAY too light.
Shana was a successful dark skinned black woman who was portrayed as adored and cherished from the get go.
That is important and they don’t seem to care.
"We now know that 24 hours without sleep, or a week of sleeping four or five hours a night induces an impairment equivalent to a blood alcohol level of .1 percent. We would never say, ‘This person is a great worker! He’s drunk all the time!’ yet we continue to celebrate people who sacrifice sleep for work."
